Description

Winsford, Cheshire born outside left Stan Wood began his football career with Whitegate Victoria in 1926 and played for Winsford United in 1927 before joining Second Division West Bromwich Albion in April 1928, making his football League debut against Notts County in September 1928, immediately establishing himself as a regular in Albion’s first eleven. He missed only one match in 1930-31 as Albion both won promotion to the First Division as Second Division runners up, and went all the way to the 1931 FA Cup Final (with Wood scoring 4 goals in earlier ties), where they beat Birmingham 2-1 at Wembley. However he lost his place (through injury?) in January 1934 and didn’t regain it until September 1935, missing out on their 1935 FA Cup Final appearance.

After West Bromwich Albion’s relegation in May 1938, Wood joined Halifax Town on a free transfer having scored 66 goals in 281 appearances, and he represented The Shaymen throughout the Second World War as well as appearing as a guest player for Huddersfield Town in 1941-42. Having scored 10 goals in 46 appearances in peacetime football for Halifax both sides of the War, he served as Halifax’s trainer from 1946 to 1949 before leaving the game.
