Description

East Ham, London born winger Terry Woodgate began his football career with Beckton in 1937 before joining Second Division West Ham United in September 1938. He made his Football League debut against Bradford Park Avenue on 7th April 1939 and subsequently played a further three matches for The Hammers before the Second World War interrupted his career.

During the War Woodgate served with the Essex Regiment and the Royal Artillery, and on the resumption of peacetime football Woodgate gained a regular place in The Hammers’ team missing one match in 1946-47 and being an ever-present during 1950-51. He scored a hat-trick in seven minutes in a 7-0 victory against Plymouth Argyle in a Football League (South) wartime match in February 1946, when Don Travis scored the other four goals for West Ham, and on Christmas Day 1950 he scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Leeds United, when his 12 goals that season was his best ever goalscoring return.

He went on to make 275 appearances for the east London club, scoring 52 goals, but having lost his place in March 1953, and with emerging competition from Harry Hooper and Malcolm Musgrove, Woodgate left West Ham to join Midland League Peterborough United the same month. He scored 15 goals in 51 appearances for Posh before subsequently joining March Town United in 1955.
