Description

Aberdeen born right half Alex Wright started his football career with junior side Aberdeen East End before joining Aberdeen, first appearing in the 1913-14 season. During the First World War he served with The Gordon Highlanders and The Royal Engineers, and also appeared as a wartime guest for Millwall. He was regarded as one of the best half backs in Scotland and gained representative honours when he represented The Scottish League in March 1922 in a 3-0 defeat to The Football League at Ibrox and for three successive seasons, 1922, 1923 and 1924, he played in the annual East v West trial for the Scottish national team without being selected for a full international cap.

After 11 goals in 142 appearances for The Dons he transferred to Heart of Midlothian in May 1922 for an estimated £2,500, a record fee for an Aberdeen player at the time. At Hearts he scored 3 times in 140 games during his 5 year spell with The Jambos. In 1927 he joined Morton for £800 and played a season in Greenock. In 1928 he became Player-Secretary-Manager of Queen of the South, a position he held until 1931 before hanging up his boots. In his first season, he was sent off when playing away in a 2-0 defeat at Albion Rovers on 24th November.
