Description

Burradon, Northumberland born left half Arthur Wright was a former England schoolboy international who began his football career with Hylton Colliery in 1935 and joined First Division Sunderland in September 1936, making his Football League debut against Leeds United in April 1938. He made 12 appearances in 1938-39 before his career was severely interrupted by the Second World War, but after the War he returned to Roker Park and featured regularly for a further eight seasons, being an ever present in 1948-49 and playing 35 League games the following season as Sunderland finished third in the League Championship. He played his last match for The Wearsiders at Sheffield United in March 1955 before retiring, having scored 14 goals in 281 appearances. After retiring from playing he joined Sunderland’s coaching staff.
