Staveley, Derbyshire born outside left Harry Wright had played for Welbeck Colliery in 1919 and in October 1920 he signed for newly elected Third Division club Gillingham, making his Football League debut at Exeter City the same month. He played 34 matches for Gillingham during 1920-21 but managed only 2 further appearances the following season before returning to Welbeck Colliery.
However he returned to League action in 1922 when he joined Second Division club Bradford City, scoring his first 2 goals in successive home and away wins against Port Vale in March 1923. From the start of the 1924-25 season onwards he became a fringe player for The Bantams, and by the time he joined hometown non league club Staveley Town after Bradford’s relegation from the Second Division in 1927, he had scored 4 goals in 69 appearances for them.
