Guardbridge, Fife born right back Robert Young was a Scottish junior international who began his football career with Vale of Eden before joining Dundee Violet, from where he was signed for First Division Bristol City by Harry Thickett in July 1907, making his Football League debut against Newcastle United the same September, playing 24 games in his debut season as Bristol City followed up their runners up position the previous season with a 10th place finish. In his second season at the club he shared League duties with Archie Annan, Young making 20 League appearances, however it was Annan who played in all 10 FA Cup ties as Bristol City made it to the 1909 FA Cup Final, where they were eventually narrowly beaten by Manchester United.
Young became the regular right back in 1910-11, however the season ended in relegation and while he played for the club both sides of the First World War, his appearances from 1913 became increasingly occasional. From early in 1911 he first experimented as a right half back, and from December 1912 most all of his appearances came in that position. He played his final game, and only post war League fixture, at Lincoln City in September 1919, before retiring having made 171 appearances for The Robins.
