Description

Stonehouse, Lanarkshire born centre half Robert Young began his football career with Swinhill Hearts in 1903 and played for Larkhall Thistle in 1904 before joining Scottish League club St Mirren in November 1905, where he made 11 appearances for The Buddies before a transfer south to Southern League club West Ham United in May 1907. He immediately made his debut that September in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur and scored his first career goal for The Hammers in a 3-0 win against Norwich City in November 1908 before being sold to First Division Middlesbrough in December 1908 after 44 appearances for The Irons.

Young made his Football League debut in a home defeat to Chelsea on New Year’s Day 1909 and the following season became Middlesbrough’s regular penalty taker, remaining Everton’s spot kick marksman after he transferred to the Goodison Park club for £1,200 in the 1910 close season after 5 goals in 37 appearances for ‘Boro.

Appearing regularly for Everton throughout 1910-11 as they finished fourth in the League Championship, Young was sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 1911, having played a further 7 matches in a campaign that would see Everton finish League Championship runners-up, after 8 goals in 42 appearances for The Toffees.

He then had three seasons in the Second Division with Wolves, and probably through injury his career came to an abrupt halt in October 1914 having scored 11 goals in 73 appearances for Wolves, 7 of which were penalties, and he had retired from football before the 1914-15 season had ended.
